After riding for a while, we passed by a grassy field and Brad stopped: "Did you see the turkeys?"
Me: "What turkeys?"
"Back there - must have been 20 of them."
This I had to see, so we rode back a hundred yards, and sure enough, there was a flock of wild turkeys meandering through the grass.

It looked more like 40 of them to me.
Since it is fairly rare to see two or three turkeys in the wild, I was amazed at the size of the group, and the fact that they didn't seem to care we were standing there watching them. Usually, they will scurry under the grass and disappear in the blink of an eye.
Very unusual.

Are you sure they were real turkeys? You know, held some dressing up beside it to see if it looked about right? It could have been some kind of art installation or something.
I think you might have stumbled upon the turkey's version of the "Underground Railroad" -- they were fleeing the recent Thanksgiving feast!
